Guys: the info posted here is so cool. I'm an amateur remixer of house music, and as such, I experiment with all kinds of dj & mastering appz for both linux and windows. The explanations you give about lossy compression artifacts really improved the sound for my re-mastering of mp3 and ogg files I do in order to make loops for mixing. It is my experience that, in order to get a good sounding mp3 to cd, you have to:
process the file with a replaygain algorithm, such as mp3gain convert to floating point wav and resample at 48000 Hz DC offset after that apply a high pass filter of 40 Hz and a low pass filter at 160000 Hz to a floating point wav of that mp3 apply a harmonic exiter to regain some high freq brilliance lost during compression (i.e Izotope Ozone) dither back to 16 bit 44100 Keep up the good work, cause I find myself returning to your site to check for updates. JT: Thanks Tomas, but I wouldn't use the high-pass and low-pass frequencies you mention here. High pass on 22 Hz is high enough, and lowpass on 21000 Hz is enough for 44.1 kHz samplerate stuff. Adding harmonics is something of personal taste, depends on the source-audio, but it isn't something everybody should always do. I always say: There's no processing like no processing. ;-) |

Hello from Miami, I just wanted to drop a note to tell you how wonderful it is that you keep vinyl alive through your site. Sometimes it feels as though I am the only one left in the world who still jams to Pauli Carman, Colonel Abrams, Dizzi Heights, and Willie Colon. I spun records (triple Technics) and used samplers (remember the Akai S950?) in Italy for 10 years (1985-1995) until the music just became to lame to bear. Whatever happened to this industry? Anyhow, today, I, too, try to preserve a lot of the good vibes of that period by "sharing the mix" with others around the world. I would love to send you a taste of my 50-hour-plus megamix and regular mix collection that I have assembled over the years; in particular that by the hard-core Revox user and best mixer in Italy in the '80s --Faber Cucchetti. Since we both are doing this for fun, I think it would be cool to compare notes. All the best to you and let me know what you think. Cheers, Simone |

| Great site guys. Tried your recommended VBR setting and found it to sound a bit better than my comparable Q6 ogg encoded songs. It looks like the last few revisions of lame are geared towards -aps and cbr128. Any thoughs to using them and how they compare to the vbr settings you're using? Thanks again for the info. |

Good thing I've been using computers since 1980, or I'd be forced to watch the world go by non-inneractively. Hi: Do you happen to know if LAME supports long file names, including spaces, from the command line, as in LAME "C:\Input file\My song.wav" "D:\Output folder\The Lame version of my song.mp3" As far as I can tell, it doesn't, but I may be missing something. What about the upper rates, like 256k and 320k. I've been listening to commercials sent from agencies, played on the air at the radio station I work at, with 128k bitrates, and they all suck. When I send out spots, i go to 320k. The difference is about the same as between cassette and vinyl (shows how old a bastard I am), and 128k is not air quailty. It's one of those "Size counts" issues. Sure 128k gives a smaller file, but you lose a lot of quality. I wonder if anybody uses their ears in radio anymore. Have you listened closely to your favorite stations? You can tell when a commercial is a decent track, or an .mp3 done at the standard rate. It's terrible!
JTHZ: Yes, what about those upper rates? Why don't you use some kind of lossless format? MP3 is not intended to be used the way you use it. |

I have been after that track since about 1988 I think now ? I understand how you dont like working for free ( am a musician myself ! 48 songs and not a dime !! ) But I have been unable to find that track ANYWHERE else. Winmx , kazaa , morpheus , you name it. So if you could encode that one track for me , I'll gladly try and track down any songs you want in return as to date that is the only time I seen proof of that songs existance !! Wat een gave site. Ik kwam terecht bij jullie via een steganografie search, om precies te zijn via http://linux20368.dn.net/fravia/stego.htm. (reverser's STEGANOGRAPHY STARTING PAGE). Toch wel een opsteker om een paar mensen tegen te komen die ,net zoals ik, proberen volgens hun eigen(-wijze)wijze een leuke draai aan het leven te geven en niet in de tredmolen mee te lopen met de meerderheid van anderen die het makkelijker vinden om maar fijn "mee te doen" in de maatschappij omdat dat zo lekker weinig risico en /of denkkracht kost (dat is in ieder geval de indruk die ik kreeg van wat jullie boodschap is en excusez-moi if I'm wrong). En jullie hebben humor die mij bevalt. Ik pleeg reeds lange tijd te denken dat alle mensen ter wereld in principe gelijk zijn en tot hetzelfde in staat, maar tot mijn (on?-)genoegen moet ik steeds constateren dat het overwegend Nederlanders zijn die m.i. blijk geven van enig inzicht in waar het werkelijk om gaat in het leven en dat via o.a. internet aan de wereld trachten te laten zien. En ook nog zijn jullie van alle markten thuis. Vooral jullie enginering skillz bewonder ik al kan ik jullie werk niet zo goed beoordelen daar ik zelf 0,0 programmeurskwaliteiten bezit, maar gezien de rest van jullie werk zal dat ook wel aan de maat zijn zoniet erboven. Om terug te komen op die Steganografie, denken jullie niet dat jullie allang "geoormerkt" zijn of zo(jullie site althans) zodat iedere bezoeker die op Contraband klikt geregistreerd wordt of zo? I.v.m the war on free communication ( of was het nu terrorisme?). Die Gator pop-up die ik steeds krijg op jullie site, is die van jullie weegs gestuurd of ben ik paranoia. Het zou natuurlijk ook nog een superplan zijn van de NSA om een site als die van jullie op te zetten en een programmaatje als Contraband te ontwikkelen met een super achterdeur. Nu weet ik dat jullie de source code vrij hebben gegeven en al kan ik er persoonlijk niks mee, geloof ik wel dat dat snor zit. Maar de knagende paranoia krijg ik er toch niet onder. | Hi. Just a note of thanks. I've been struggling to find the best tools to maintain my extensive MP3 collection. I work primarily on a Mac, but have found the sofwtare vendors who are actually using LAME lag behind the PC guys. So although it's more work moving files between the two platforms, the quality I get with RazorLAME and the LAME 3.9.1 encoder is worth it. Keep up the good work. |

But there is only one problemo: the tehnology. This software industry has a very fast evolution! I learn something today and tomorrow it's no good. I cracked many shit in windoze95/98 but there came up win2000, NT, Xp, millenium *not to mention linux and otherz. So when a new thing it's comming up I try to find some info about it. But I can't find it anywhere. How do you take your information about the software you crack, or about the servers you hack?????????? That's all thanks |
