Guys: the info posted here is so cool. I'm an amateur remixer of house music, and as such, I experiment with all kinds of dj & mastering appz for both linux and windows. The explanations you give about lossy compression artifacts really improved the sound for my re-mastering of mp3 and ogg files I do in order to make loops for mixing. It is my experience that, in order to get a good sounding mp3 to cd, you have to:
process the file with a replaygain algorithm, such as mp3gain convert to floating point wav and resample at 48000 Hz DC offset after that apply a high pass filter of 40 Hz and a low pass filter at 160000 Hz to a floating point wav of that mp3 apply a harmonic exiter to regain some high freq brilliance lost during compression (i.e Izotope Ozone) dither back to 16 bit 44100 Keep up the good work, cause I find myself returning to your site to check for updates. JT: Thanks Tomas, but I wouldn't use the high-pass and low-pass frequencies you mention here. High pass on 22 Hz is high enough, and lowpass on 21000 Hz is enough for 44.1 kHz samplerate stuff. Adding harmonics is something of personal taste, depends on the source-audio, but it isn't something everybody should always do. I always say: There's no processing like no processing. ;-) |
| Could not find Romania in the list so I choose Europe :). Hi, from one mix lover to another ! |

Hello from Miami, I just wanted to drop a note to tell you how wonderful it is that you keep vinyl alive through your site. Sometimes it feels as though I am the only one left in the world who still jams to Pauli Carman, Colonel Abrams, Dizzi Heights, and Willie Colon. I spun records (triple Technics) and used samplers (remember the Akai S950?) in Italy for 10 years (1985-1995) until the music just became to lame to bear. Whatever happened to this industry? Anyhow, today, I, too, try to preserve a lot of the good vibes of that period by "sharing the mix" with others around the world. I would love to send you a taste of my 50-hour-plus megamix and regular mix collection that I have assembled over the years; in particular that by the hard-core Revox user and best mixer in Italy in the '80s --Faber Cucchetti. Since we both are doing this for fun, I think it would be cool to compare notes. All the best to you and let me know what you think. Cheers, Simone |
| All I wanted was some encoding software.... |
| YOUR SITE IS WONDERFUL; IT IS REALLY NICE DESIGNE$D AND HAS VERY USEFUL INFO; I LEARNED A LOT ABOUT MP ENCODING AND HOW SHOULD I MAKE MY OWN SETTING; EVERY TIME I WANT TO REFRESH WHAT I KNOW I COME HERE; IT HAS INFO ABOUT MUCH MORE THINGS TOO AND ALSO MANY OF YOUR WORKS TO LOOK AT; HEAR ; ETC; THANK YOU A LOT |
|
Jeeze..I'd sure hate to piss you guys off !! I don't know chit from shinola about pgms or computers. I'm lucky if runs when I push the start button. The thing is.. I'm dumb about all this stuff, but you guys are smart about it which keeps the dummies like me connected and running and happy. Good on ya,guys....and thanks. |

I am looking to buy the record "Movieland" from the 80's, and a search sent me here. Can anyone help???? |
| Great site guys. Tried your recommended VBR setting and found it to sound a bit better than my comparable Q6 ogg encoded songs. It looks like the last few revisions of lame are geared towards -aps and cbr128. Any thoughs to using them and how they compare to the vbr settings you're using? Thanks again for the info. |
| 1987 and 1988 mixes are out of this world. Fantastic job. |

WOW! I'm kinda new to this whole thing and would like to use a computer to play music between sets and/or bands at our live gigs. This is the first helpful web site I've visited in several days of trying to figure this whole thing out. Great Job, P2P also means pros helping pros. Best Regards, J |
|
At first: Lame roxx! ;) I'm using it for a long time, and I'm totally satisfied with it. The additional info about encoding from FM source was very useful. (My switches are usually -b 256 (or 224 for pop/trance/dance music) -q1 -m s from CD-source.) Golbat. JT: Just know that -ms is bullshit, especially under your circumstances I would use -mj |
|
Hello, How r u, i like your site, it is very usefull wares, realy good, i need your help, i have v12 database (Micromedia Director)it is password protected can you tell me how to open this file or how to recover password? thank you |

Greetings: Your ftp site mentioned extra access should my personal story be one of interest. Synopsis: 53 year old former insurance exec afflicted with sponadiasys, a degenerative spinal condition. Good thing I've been using computers since 1980, or I'd be forced to watch the world go by non-inneractively. So, after 15 years, out of money, out of work, and my neurosugeon says running out of time, though I place little credence in his opionions. Lack of funds causes me to take greatr interet in freeware and even warez (let 'em sue me.) Pathetic enough? Yr progs are extremely useful and I'd be interested any that could simplfy life.
JTHZ: We're sorry, but we can't possibly publically discuss warez-exchange with you here. Use e-mail. |
|

Hans JT: Buitengewoon goed. |

Hi: Do you happen to know if LAME supports long file names, including spaces, from the command line, as in LAME "C:\Input file\My song.wav" "D:\Output folder\The Lame version of my song.mp3" As far as I can tell, it doesn't, but I may be missing something. Thanks very much for any help. Lee JTHZ: Long win32 pathnames are fully supported in lame. Perhaps you need to change directory first on your system? |
|
Keep up the spirit! Groeten, Schimi |

Yo Hens, hope your course is going well, just thought I'd say hi, and get doin' some more tunes guvna! :) Ta, Mark. |

Nice page and good content / links. Hopefully people will see your coments about LAME and begin to question the the crap they've read; discounting MP3 as a positive contribution to music. Nice kitty pics too! Dave |
| being an informtion and technology junkie, I appreciate your information and assistance with LAME. I am using it with Exact Audio Copy and surely appreciate the results. |
|
You folk are getting better every time I check. Just like "Oude Belegen Boeren Kaas" Keep it up! Alex |

What about the upper rates, like 256k and 320k. I've been listening to commercials sent from agencies, played on the air at the radio station I work at, with 128k bitrates, and they all suck. When I send out spots, i go to 320k. The difference is about the same as between cassette and vinyl (shows how old a bastard I am), and 128k is not air quailty. It's one of those "Size counts" issues. Sure 128k gives a smaller file, but you lose a lot of quality. I wonder if anybody uses their ears in radio anymore. Have you listened closely to your favorite stations? You can tell when a commercial is a decent track, or an .mp3 done at the standard rate. It's terrible!
JTHZ: Yes, what about those upper rates? Why don't you use some kind of lossless format? MP3 is not intended to be used the way you use it. |
| Great site, covering important issues. |
|
Ei, i'm always I, Mitch, i see your vynil page and love it! I have add a link to my web site to your vynil and home page ! Your too cool !!!! really !!! see you next times ! Very nice work....best regards....Mitch :-) |

Hi ! Very nice site ! I hope you read this message ! I'd like to became a member of your webring. How can I? Nice days..... |
| thank you for a great project! |
| I voted and voted and voted yet never got it *lol* You had a song called " Is this love " by Chris Cameron listed as songs you could put into mp3. I have been after that track since about 1988 I think now ? I understand how you dont like working for free ( am a musician myself ! 48 songs and not a dime !! ) But I have been unable to find that track ANYWHERE else. Winmx , kazaa , morpheus , you name it. So if you could encode that one track for me , I'll gladly try and track down any songs you want in return as to date that is the only time I seen proof of that songs existance !! Email me and let me know. Thx in advance. Spoony |
| A very good site. I feel comfortable with your approach and hope this work can and will be continued. |
| Thanks for the fun |

I.v.m the war on free communication ( of was het nu terrorisme?). Adios. Veronica. |
| Leuke site, man! |
| A Great site with useful stuff - many thanks! Best regards, James Klinger (living in Germany at this moment in my life) |

| Hi |
|
Hi there! Thank you for an excellent mp3 encoding site! Thanx to you guys I currently encode all my music using your suggested commandline: -V2 --vbr-mtrh -q0 -b96 --lowpass 19.7 --athtype 3 -mj --scale 0.99 It works like a charm every time. And to all of you who haven't tried the commandline above: Do it! Keep up the good work on the site!
Best regards, P.S. Don't forget to visit "The Official Dogpound Website" for some good and melodic rock of the heavier kind! |
| Thanks for the software...great job! |
| yet another one |
| Just testing new guestbook-code, destroying i f r a m e tags, i****e |
| ...nice homepage :-) |
| Hi. Just a note of thanks. I've been struggling to find the best tools to maintain my extensive MP3 collection. I work primarily on a Mac, but have found the sofwtare vendors who are actually using LAME lag behind the PC guys. So although it's more work moving files between the two platforms, the quality I get with RazorLAME and the LAME 3.9.1 encoder is worth it. Keep up the good work. |
|
hey henz.... i found your site totally by accident.. love it.. and it's awesome to see you up here. have a great day. c |

| Hey, toffe site! Happy 2002! |
| thanx for the good job |

I have a great respect for u and 4 your work. Only one question: how? how did u got so far? I'm from Romania, a fuckin' poor country. I've always wanted to become a hacker. But there is only one problemo: the tehnology. This software industry has a very fast evolution! I learn something today and tomorrow it's no good. I cracked many shit in windoze95/98 but there came up win2000, NT, Xp, millenium *not to mention linux and otherz. So when a new thing it's comming up I try to find some info about it. But I can't find it anywhere. How do you take your information about the software you crack, or about the servers you hack?????????? That's all thanks |
| Just wanted to be guest number 100 as well!!! |

I am trying to get hold of Chase, love for the future Do you know where i can download or can you play it sometime? JTHZ: Check out the jthz.com/vinyl page, it'll be there soon... ~8*) |

You are in fact cool and have inspired me - in fact - you have inspired the theme for the worlds largest downloadable religious library of scriptures of the worlds religions hindu, buddhist,Bahai, and so forth that frames a bunch of stuff about the return of Jesus (who no kidding has you guessed it - come and gone), so its the theme of an archive that will go down in history you see, maybe for millions of years. Pretty much inspiring huh? (of course! angels have harps) Check out the cd's online homepage. If you download it check out the Great Pyramid firesides. This is not a hoax. http://www.bahaullah.net/sound/xcloudnine.html Ps; If your into helping link this up to good (angels have harps get it) links for it, that would great, but anyway I'll probabbly fix the broken links with some of the links on your whatever it is cool media links page, (unless you are offended). Wow huh! |
